Popping Pills - Week 12 - Biology

Lesson: Antioxidants and Free Radicals
Supplements
Asprin

In the modern day and age where we live now, it is quite apparent that the majority of the population seeks a type of medicine or ailment that is instant and relatively easy to administer. With the evolution of science, we are now able to manipulate the important components of a vitamin and mineral to our liking. Supplements have grown in popularity, as you may see in their variance throughout their own aisle in supermarkets.
Considering we have come from a culture where we had no access to supplements in the past many years ago, it does seem as though we have developed a habit of relying heavily on supplements rather than maintaining a balanced diet. Our sources of vitamins and antioxidants have become in a form of a pill, taken once or twice a day. Though this form of ingesting antioxidants and other items of nutritional value appear just alright, it slowly creates a disconnect between the raw vegetables, fruits, and legumes that are around us today. As humans, it is important to stay connected to the sources of energy, and be familiar with the qi of our food.

"Asprin a day could dramatically cut cancer risk".
This sounds almost too good to be true, and I highly doubt that an average American would be able to maintain such a routine for 10 years. Though this simple idea is extremely seductive to combating cancer, the article presenting this idea did not seem to have much information backing up their statement. I would like to see quantifiable results and comparisons in order to believe in this. As of now, it comes across as another "magical pill" for us to fall back to. Adding another pill to the pile of others to take in the beginning or end of the day.
