Closer than We Think - Week 3 - Biology

Lesson: Genetic Evolution
Sleep Cycles
Human Genetic Evolution

I am not surprised to hear about our close relationship with chimps. It seems like for too long we have dictated this as a massive phenomenon, and now approach this with the intent to deduce as much as we can in order to preserve our connection with animals and beyond. Though I feel happy to hear that 99.4% of the most critical DNA sites are identical to chimp genes, we do not pay them just as enough respect alike our own kind to reap the greatest scientific discoveries yet to be made.

As a huge advocate for sleep, I completely relate the healing powers of resting to maintain a productive, healthy, and positive life. No wonder one may feel up to shape after having a well-rested night's worth of sleep. As important as it is to maintain a consistent cycle, our brains are able to process the hundreds and thousands of sources of information that we face throughout the days.
In regards to the moon cycles, I personally find myself more active and less inclined to sleep during the full moon. It's influence on the earth and animals very much well affect our own kind.

Mon - Slept in for the holiday. Woke up feeling refreshed.
Tues - Stayed up late. Got to school late.
Wed - Stayed up late. Woke up feeling tired.
Thurs - Stayed up late. Woke up feeling extremely tired.
Fri - Did not stay up too late. Very groggy in the morning.
Sat - Slept in a couple of hours before work. Woke up feeling frazzled and very sluggish.
Sun - Slept in. Still does not feel like I "made up my time over the weekend"

Observation: Staying up late is more harmful for myself than good. Snoozing does not help maintain a good quality sleep and waking-up experience.
Create better sleeping habits!

  1. I must admit, I have a difficult time going to the zoo and "visiting" our cousins. I had an Oakland Zoo membership for years and would skate past the primates. I would rationalize it by saying my two small children where too loud for the "Quiet Zone", but I just feel uncomfortable seeing our cousins in such surroundings. Yes, they were fed and had "entertainment", but I felt the enclosure walls close in on me.

Sleep? I am battling to keep my eyes open as I write this comment. Last night, I stayed up until 1:30 am watching Westworld. I have to watch that show a few times before I understand it, and that is with all last night's subtitles. Of course, getting to Oakland from Martinez was not easy this morning. And the glass of Sangiovese late last night did not help. I guess we are good examples that humans need more sleep to function well the next day.
